Let me say up front that Chris Love has done a good job on building on what is already a well documented Web site. I liked the fact that he covered most all the elements of a social network web application. I also appreciated the many references included in each chapter for further exploration of the topic at hand. That said, no book can supply the needs and desires of all its readers, and I am no exception. Chris stated up front who his target audience was and I believe he served them well. My one criticism is the way in which he develops his database and underlying structures to address the database. I would have preferred a chapter on the design of the data to be used. Had he done this he might have served a greater audience. The developer, who only wanted to know how to incorporate polls into his site, had to read much of the book prior to the poll chapter to understand Chris' approach to the data and the repository using entity framework. I was very pleasantly surprised for the reference to the MVC version of the site as this is where my interests currently lie.

There are a lot of good tips and it will help us a lot when we make the move to .Net 2.0.

The book is a good starting point for people that was to learn the different ways of binding data from supported sources to ASP.NET controls. The author does a pretty good job of explaining the basics of some of the data bindable controls like ListBox, DropDownList, etc. There are whole chapters dedicated to the Repeater, DataList, DataGrid and DataView controls. Unfortunately there are a few things that I did not like about the book. The first was the code, there were quite a few places where the code was not correct there were typos or incorrect characters to delimitate strings. There where several locations in the code where double angle brackets (« ») where used for strings instead of double quotes ("). Some of the code samples provided for the DataManager class were susceptible to SQL Injection attacks. Now I understand it is a sample but a little disclaimed should be made to break habits. One last thing, some of code could benefit from some refactoring.

ASP .NET 2.0 Demystified explains how to write server-side components for dynamic, interactive Web pages and powerful Web-based applications that are easy to develop and modify. This self-teaching guide comes complete with key points, background information, quizzes at the end of each chapter, and even a final exam. Simple enough for beginners but challenging enough for advanced students, this is a lively and entertaining brush-up, introductory text, or classroom supplement. After the first 2 chapters, it was painfully clear this book was not written by someone familiar with the release version of Visual Studio 2005 - which this book references and recommends for following along with the examples. I will give the author the benefit of doubt on this - and assume that he simply tried to write this book too early using a pre-release version of Visual Studio 2005. Regardless, the result is an extremely confusing tour of ASP.NET 2.0. This is particularly disappointing given the intended audience for this book.

On page 2 of the introduction, it says "You can copy examples illustrated in this book from our web site" - which is where? Because nowhere in this book can I find any kind of URL. It could be the publisher's at [...], but once you get there, this book isn't listed for either code downloads or for errata (and it should be on both web pages). And I wouldn't need to find their web page at all if it weren't for the errors, starting with the first web application project in Chapter 3. For example, you're told to name the property ID you assign to a button as CreateAccount.

This book is ideal for any programmer with .NET experience to learn the new technology. Anyone who has experimented with .NET 1.1 or implemented full-scale solutions for their employers would be a perfect candidate to easily absorb all of the materials within this book. You should have some general understanding of how a basic database works, with experience in developing software to access a database object such as a stored procedure. The book contains a dozen projects you can use right off the disk with minimal setup needed. Each project has step-by-step instructions on installing the source code to your local machine. The goal of the chapter and accompanying project code is to enable you to understand and quickly modify the project to enhance its capabilities or to learn how to implement some of the features it uses within different situations. Through the repeated studying of simple project walkthroughs and hands-on experimentation, you learn more about the design and creation of full projects in the 2.0 version of ASP.NET. The book references some of the advancements since the older version 1.1, but not to any level of detail. Most of the logic and material is gauged toward explaining the deeper concepts within the 2.0 version in its entirety.

This book is designed in similar fashion to other Wrox Press Instant Results titles, in that it serves as more of a reference manual of usable and instructional source projects, as compared to a traditional end-to-end book. This is because most programmers do not need to absorb all of the available information on a particular subject in a traditional fashion. Many times, programmers are looking to find the answers within the code, and then read content or material on it as an afterthought. This book aims to satisfy this tendency, but not at the expense of providing quality information and useful instruction at the same time. Thus, the topics and concepts that must be learned are taught from basic to advanced forms, across all of the 12 projects, with overlapping tools and features to drive home the concepts.

This book was written in beta is very unfortunate indeed. That it has gone this long without an update is tragic. And that the publisher will not accept a trade-up for a more recent book is downright dirty. The book is not worth its price. There is no CD and the book is laden with beta code that often times does not give the beginner the slightest hint as to what to try to make it work. Yet this piece of work has its qualities. Not able to get anything to work past page 150, I put the book down and began reading two other books on .NET. At a certain point, the .NET light clicked on in my head. And now, a year later, I've returned to this book to find many valuable gems that my other books never mention. This book is best suited for the intermediate .NET programmer, who has grasped the major differing concepts between ASP classic and .NET. Until then, the book is a jumble of listings that seem like you'd never use them. I've found this book to be a helpful (albeit inaccurate) resource when I need to quickly acquaint myself with a new object or class (the only reason I give it TWO stars instead of ONE) If you're a beginner to .NET (or programming) I highly recommend "ASP.NET for Web Designers" by Peter Ladka.

When it comes to programming, Mac users appear to be at a disadvantage. However, with a little research via the internet, I've been able to take advantage of the programming material that is mostly geared towards Windows. This book is no exception. The most difficult part of the process is getting PHP and MySQL set up and that has nothing to do with this book! A quick search on the internet shows that a lot of people have this problem.

Initially, I thought there were some problems with the code, but I always discovered that is was MY code, not what was written in the book. It's very easy to forget a semi-colon or a bracket or even a period and not see it even after carefully re-checking. (It can help to print it out instead of trying to read it from the screen.) Personally, I think programming can be quite dull, especially for someone who enjoys "design." But, that's part of what makes this book good, it does incorporate design and it uses concepts that are actually fun. I'm still learning, but I'm enjoying the process and I can't wait to start using some of things I've learned on my own website.

Coming from VB 6.0, I was mostly interested in getting behind the .net framework and utilizing this added power to create much more serious programs. Unfortunately, little advice is given to the 6.0 programmer, and most of the specific .net commands (especially the new ones in 2005) are not presented in a way that the user can utilize that suits their own style, rather we're given a gigantic line of .net specific code and told, "this does that". Rather than explaining how or why each specific property comes into play to produce a result, we're just given a big line or a big block of code and are supposed to just trust that it helps to perform a function that contributes to the results of the final project. The problem this creates is that many people will be likely to write out code because they just happen to know that it performs a certain function, but they don't know WHY it performs this function, and therefore will lack the ability to create custom code to suit their needs.

JDO allows you to store and retrieve objects in a way that's natural to Java programmers. Instead of working with JDBC or EJB's container-managed persistence, you work directly with your Java objects.
