Free Download | A Developer's Guide to SQL Server 2005 | Bob Beauchemin, Dan Sullivan

"An excellent book for those of us who need to get up to speed on what's new in SQL Server 2005. The authors made sure this book includes the final information for the release version of the product. Most other books out now are based on beta versions. It covers key areas from XML and SQLCLR to Notification Services. Although the wide variety of information is great, my favorite part was the advice given on when to use what, and how performance is affected." --Laura Blood Senior Software Developer Blue Note Computing, Inc. "SQL Server 2005 is a massive release with a large number of new features. Many of these features were designed to make SQL Server a great application development platform. This book provides comprehensive information about the SQL Server features of most interest to application developers. The lucid text and wealth of examples will give a developer a clear understanding of how to use SQL Server 2005 to a whole new class of database applications. It should be on every SQL Server developer's bookshelf."

Free Download | Foundations of ASP.NET AJAX (Expert's Voice in .Net) | Robin Pars, Laurence Moroney, John Grieb

Since the emergence of Google Maps 12 months ago, Ajax programming techniques have become one of the hottest topics in the programming arena. To date, the frameworks available for creating these applications have been complex and have separated the development of the client–side Ajax (on the user’s machine) from the server–side supporting technology (on the company’s machines). This separation has made development slow and difficult. ASP.NET AJAX is Microsoft’s solution to this problem. ASP.NET AJAX (formerly code–named Atlas) is a set of extensions to the existing ASP.NET 2.0 technology that provides you with a fast-and-simple environment to create Ajax applications. Microsoft has combined Ajax with ASP.NET technology and provided a unified set of development tools within Visual Studio 2005. For the first time, Ajax applications can be developed seamlessly in conjunction with a supporting technology. Foundations of ASP.NET AJAX (written by Laurence Moroney the author of Apress successful Foundations of Atlas) gives you a detailed grounding in how ASP.NET AJAX works. It takes you swiftly through the basic principles of Ajax, then deep into the heart of the technology, where every namespace is discussed and every function considered. By the end of the book, you’ll know all the essentials to confidently produce cutting-edge ASP.NET AJAX applications swiftly and professionally. You will not need any reference beyond this book.

Free Download | ASP.NET 3.5 Website Programming: Problem - Design - Solution | Chris Love

Let me say up front that Chris Love has done a good job on building on what is already a well documented Web site. I liked the fact that he covered most all the elements of a social network web application. I also appreciated the many references included in each chapter for further exploration of the topic at hand. That said, no book can supply the needs and desires of all its readers, and I am no exception. Chris stated up front who his target audience was and I believe he served them well. My one criticism is the way in which he develops his database and underlying structures to address the database. I would have preferred a chapter on the design of the data to be used. Had he done this he might have served a greater audience. The developer, who only wanted to know how to incorporate polls into his site, had to read much of the book prior to the poll chapter to understand Chris' approach to the data and the repository using entity framework. I was very pleasantly surprised for the reference to the MVC version of the site as this is where my interests currently lie.

Get Microsoft Content Management Server Service Pack 2 up and running, and start using the most talked about features of ASP.NET 2.0 like master pages, site navigation, themes, and the membership provider model, in your MCMS development. The book is written for developers who work with Microsoft Content Management Server, and want to update their skills to take advantage of the latest offerings in ASP.NET. If you are an MCMS developer who hasn't yet got into ASP.NET 2.0, this book is an ideal introduction to the most exciting features of ASP.NET 2.0, and how you can make them work for you. This book has good coverage of how to use .Net 2.0 features on MCMS. I found the chapters on installing service pack 2 to be fairly light. There were a lot of screen shots and a few helpful tips. I expected a more thorough discussion of the bugs and quirks you encounter moving to .Net 2.0 and Visual Studio 2005. However, this a good book. There are a lot of good tips and it will help us a lot when we make the move to .Net 2.0.

Free Download | ASP.NET Data Presentation Controls Essentials | Joydip Kanjilal

The book is a good starting point for people that was to learn the different ways of binding data from supported sources to ASP.NET controls. The author does a pretty good job of explaining the basics of some of the data bindable controls like ListBox, DropDownList, etc. There are whole chapters dedicated to the Repeater, DataList, DataGrid and DataView controls. Unfortunately there are a few things that I did not like about the book. The first was the code, there were quite a few places where the code was not correct there were typos or incorrect characters to delimitate strings. There where several locations in the code where double angle brackets (« ») where used for strings instead of double quotes ("). Some of the code samples provided for the DataManager class were susceptible to SQL Injection attacks. Now I understand it is a sample but a little disclaimed should be made to break habits. One last thing, some of code could benefit from some refactoring.

Free Download | ASP.NET 3.5 Application Architecture and Design | Vivek Thakur

Application architecture is an essential skill for ASP.NET developers. It is always tempting to jump in and start coding, but planning your architecture early in the project will leave you with a solid application that scales well, is easy to modify and extend, and saves you time and effort later on. As businesses struggle to control their costs, writing solid code that can be extended easily is becoming even more important. This book takes a pragmatic approach to Application Architecture in ASP.NET 3.5. It presents a series of common architectural models, and shows how to select the best ones for your project and apply them. The book begins by showing you how to use the main architectural models in your applications. You will see how to implement n-tier architectures, MVC, design patterns, and more. But this is no software engineering theory book - it is a practical, hands-on guide that shows you how to use these techniques in your software straight away. We then go on to build SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture) applications with the Windows Communication Framework (WCF). Finally the book contains some essential guidance on effective database design, and a chapter on localizing your applications.

Free Download | ASP.NET 2.0 Demystified | James Keogh

ASP .NET 2.0 Demystified explains how to write server-side components for dynamic, interactive Web pages and powerful Web-based applications that are easy to develop and modify. This self-teaching guide comes complete with key points, background information, quizzes at the end of each chapter, and even a final exam. Simple enough for beginners but challenging enough for advanced students, this is a lively and entertaining brush-up, introductory text, or classroom supplement. After the first 2 chapters, it was painfully clear this book was not written by someone familiar with the release version of Visual Studio 2005 - which this book references and recommends for following along with the examples. I will give the author the benefit of doubt on this - and assume that he simply tried to write this book too early using a pre-release version of Visual Studio 2005. Regardless, the result is an extremely confusing tour of ASP.NET 2.0. This is particularly disappointing given the intended audience for this book.

On page 2 of the introduction, it says "You can copy examples illustrated in this book from our web site" - which is where? Because nowhere in this book can I find any kind of URL. It could be the publisher's at [...], but once you get there, this book isn't listed for either code downloads or for errata (and it should be on both web pages). And I wouldn't need to find their web page at all if it weren't for the errors, starting with the first web application project in Chapter 3. For example, you're told to name the property ID you assign to a button as CreateAccount.

Free Download | ASP.NET 2.0 Instant Results | Imar Spaanjaars

This book is ideal for any programmer with .NET experience to learn the new technology. Anyone who has experimented with .NET 1.1 or implemented full-scale solutions for their employers would be a perfect candidate to easily absorb all of the materials within this book. You should have some general understanding of how a basic database works, with experience in developing software to access a database object such as a stored procedure. The book contains a dozen projects you can use right off the disk with minimal setup needed. Each project has step-by-step instructions on installing the source code to your local machine. The goal of the chapter and accompanying project code is to enable you to understand and quickly modify the project to enhance its capabilities or to learn how to implement some of the features it uses within different situations. Through the repeated studying of simple project walkthroughs and hands-on experimentation, you learn more about the design and creation of full projects in the 2.0 version of ASP.NET. The book references some of the advancements since the older version 1.1, but not to any level of detail. Most of the logic and material is gauged toward explaining the deeper concepts within the 2.0 version in its entirety.

This book is designed in similar fashion to other Wrox Press Instant Results titles, in that it serves as more of a reference manual of usable and instructional source projects, as compared to a traditional end-to-end book. This is because most programmers do not need to absorb all of the available information on a particular subject in a traditional fashion. Many times, programmers are looking to find the answers within the code, and then read content or material on it as an afterthought. This book aims to satisfy this tendency, but not at the expense of providing quality information and useful instruction at the same time. Thus, the topics and concepts that must be learned are taught from basic to advanced forms, across all of the 12 projects, with overlapping tools and features to drive home the concepts.

Free Download | Special Edition Using Asp.Net | Richard Leinecker

This book was written in beta is very unfortunate indeed. That it has gone this long without an update is tragic. And that the publisher will not accept a trade-up for a more recent book is downright dirty. The book is not worth its price. There is no CD and the book is laden with beta code that often times does not give the beginner the slightest hint as to what to try to make it work. Yet this piece of work has its qualities. Not able to get anything to work past page 150, I put the book down and began reading two other books on .NET. At a certain point, the .NET light clicked on in my head. And now, a year later, I've returned to this book to find many valuable gems that my other books never mention. This book is best suited for the intermediate .NET programmer, who has grasped the major differing concepts between ASP classic and .NET. Until then, the book is a jumble of listings that seem like you'd never use them. I've found this book to be a helpful (albeit inaccurate) resource when I need to quickly acquaint myself with a new object or class (the only reason I give it TWO stars instead of ONE) If you're a beginner to .NET (or programming) I highly recommend "ASP.NET for Web Designers" by Peter Ladka.

Free Download | The Visual Basic .NET Programming Language | Paul Vick

Once in a while, Visual Basic goes through a paradigm shift. The recent jump to .NET was one, and The Visual Basic .NET Programming Language succeeds very well in explaining to programmers--and not just experienced VB programmers, either--what the changes mean to software architecture and implementation. If you need to figure out how VB.NET works, this book, more than any other, will help you make fast initial progress. This guide is clear; it's practical; it focuses on the parts of the VB.NET programming language and its runtime environment that every developer has to understand. You'll probably want to supplement this book with more specialized ones that deal with databases, networking, user interfaces or whatever specific capabilities you need to work with, but this book is probably the best place to start. The author's attention to coding style and software design is a bonus that will help you write code that not only runs, but is more self-documenting and easier to debug.

The educational value of this book is inversely proportional to its mass. It's a thinnish volume, but Paul Vick--who works for Microsoft and helped design VB.NET--makes such clever use of examples that it's likely you'll find answers to many of your questions (for example, "How do you write class constructors in VB.NET?" and "What does the VB.NET inheritance model look like?") in the form of executable code. Read Vick's explanations, examine and run his code, and you'll be well down the road to VB.NET proficiency. --David Wall Topics covered: How to program in VB.NET, with emphasis on the core language itself rather than on any development environment or specialized API. Sections address basic and complex data types, operators, and exception handling. About half the book is a clear, example-driven explanation of object-orientation under VB.NET. An appendix deals with difference between the old Component Object Model (COM) and the new Common Language Runtime (CLR).

Free Download | Core Java Data Objects

The need for persistence is a prerequisite for any enterprise application and the case is no different for applications written in the Java programming language. A typical Java application will consist of code that is responsible for storing and retrieving the application specific data to some kind of storage facility so that it can be retrieved and used at a later time. Now there is a new alternative-Java Data Objects (JDO) that is well placed to change the way developers have traditionally perceived persistence in their applications. JDO is a standard developed under the auspices of the Java Community Process by a number of industry participants. JDO is a new technology, but it is one that holds great promise. If you are an architect, a developer or even a manager that is involved with persistence in Java and would like to gain an insight into this technology then this book is for you.

Free Download | PHP 5 MySQL Programming for the Absolute Beginner

Are you ready to begin programming with PHP and MySQL? Then get ready to jump right in. You'll get an introduction to programming with a specific focus on programming web servers with the PHP programming language. Much of the original content from the first edition (1931841322) is retained, but you'll also cover updates relating to the upcoming PHP 5.0 release. Following the same format as the popular first edition, this book provides easy-to-follow instruction. You will use the concepts presented in the book to create games using PHP and MySQL. As each concept is put to the test, you'll acquire programming skills that will easily transition to real-world projects. A true beginner's guide, this book enables you to acquire programming skills that you can use in the next language that you tackle.

When it comes to programming, Mac users appear to be at a disadvantage. However, with a little research via the internet, I've been able to take advantage of the programming material that is mostly geared towards Windows. This book is no exception. The most difficult part of the process is getting PHP and MySQL set up and that has nothing to do with this book! A quick search on the internet shows that a lot of people have this problem.

Initially, I thought there were some problems with the code, but I always discovered that is was MY code, not what was written in the book. It's very easy to forget a semi-colon or a bracket or even a period and not see it even after carefully re-checking. (It can help to print it out instead of trying to read it from the screen.) Personally, I think programming can be quite dull, especially for someone who enjoys "design." But, that's part of what makes this book good, it does incorporate design and it uses concepts that are actually fun. I'm still learning, but I'm enjoying the process and I can't wait to start using some of things I've learned on my own website.

Free Download | Oracle PL SQL Language Pocket Reference

This pocket reference provides quick-reference information that will help you use Oracle's PL/SQL language. It is a companion to Steven Feuerstein and Bill Pribyl's bestselling book, Oracle PL/SQL Programming, and includes coverage of the latest version of Oracle, Oracle8i.

Oracle is the most popular database management system in use today, and PL/SQL plays a pivotal role in current and projected Oracle products and applications. PL/SQL provides procedural extensions to the SQL relational database language and to an ever-growing number of Oracle development tools. It offers a myriad of data types, and such features as cursors, loops, conditional and sequential control statements, exception handlers, records, tables, and constructs for developing modular code (functions, procedures, and packages). Originally a rather limited tool, PL/SQL became with Oracle7 a mature and effective language for developers. Now, with the introduction of Oracle8, PL/SQL has taken the next step towards becoming a fully realized programming language providing sophisticated object-oriented capabilities.

The book on which this pocket reference is based, Oracle PL/SQL Programming, filled a huge gap in the Oracle market, providing developers with a single, comprehensive guide to building applications with PL/SQL -- and building them the right way. That book has become the bible for PL/SQL developers who have raved about its completeness, readability, and practicality. The book is packed with strategies, code architectures, tips, techniques, and fully realized code. The second edition of the book updated the text with the new Oracle8 PL/SQL features, including object types, collections, external procedures, and large object data types and functions.

The pocket reference boils down the most vital information from the large (nearly 1000 pages) book into an accessible quick reference that summarizes the basics of PL/SQL -- its block structure, fundamental language elements (e.g., identifiers, declarations, defaults), data structures (including Oracle8 objects), and statements for program control, loops, exception handling, and database access. It also covers the the basics of using Oracle's procedures, functions, and packages, and the latest features for Oracle8i.

Free Download | Visual Basic 2005 For Dummies | PDF

Coming from VB 6.0, I was mostly interested in getting behind the .net framework and utilizing this added power to create much more serious programs. Unfortunately, little advice is given to the 6.0 programmer, and most of the specific .net commands (especially the new ones in 2005) are not presented in a way that the user can utilize that suits their own style, rather we're given a gigantic line of .net specific code and told, "this does that". Rather than explaining how or why each specific property comes into play to produce a result, we're just given a big line or a big block of code and are supposed to just trust that it helps to perform a function that contributes to the results of the final project. The problem this creates is that many people will be likely to write out code because they just happen to know that it performs a certain function, but they don't know WHY it performs this function, and therefore will lack the ability to create custom code to suit their needs.

  • Visual Basic is Microsoft's premier programming language, used by more than three million developers and in 50 million Windows applications
  • Programming pro and veteran Wrox author Bill Sempf has thoroughly overhauled the book's organization and content, making it even more accessible to programming beginners
  • Highlights new VB features and functions, including important advances in compatibility with older VB versions
  • Offers plain-English explanations of variables, constants, loops, VB syntax, forms, controls, objects, and other fundamentals
  • The CD-ROM includes all source code and third-party software tools

Free Download | Java data objects

JDO allows you to store and retrieve objects in a way that's natural to Java programmers. Instead of working with JDBC or EJB's container-managed persistence, you work directly with your Java objects. You don't have to copy data to and from database tables or issue SELECTs to perform queries: your JDO implementation takes care of persistence behind-the-scenes, and you make queries based on the fields of your Java objects, using normal Java syntax. The result is software that is truly object-oriented: not code that is partially object-oriented, with a large database-shaped lump on the back end.

JDO lets you save plain, ordinary Java objects, and does not force you to use different data models and types for dealing with storage. As a result, your code becomes easier to maintain, easier to re-use, and easier to test. And you're not tied to a specific database vendor: your JDO code is entirely database-independent. You don't even need to know whether the datastore is a relational database, an object database, or just a set of files.

This book, written by the JDO Specification Lead and one of the key contributors to the JDO Specification, is the definitive work on the JDO API. It gives you a thorough introduction to JDO, starting with a simple application that demonstrates many of JDO's capabilities. It shows you how to make classes persistent, how JDO maps persistent classes to the database, how to configure JDO at runtime, how to perform transactions, and how to make queries. More advanced chapters cover optional features such as nontransactional access and optimistic transactions. The book concludes by discussing the use of JDO in web applications and J2EE environments. Whether you only want to read up on an interesting new technology, or are seriously considering an alternative to JDBC or EJB CMP, you'll find that this book is essential. It provides by far the most authoritative and complete coverage available.
